The project for the urban, architectural, and functional redevelopment of the former Tobacco Factory in Turin represents a major urban regeneration initiative within the former industrial district of Regio Parco, located in the northeastern part of the city. This transformation aims to breathe new life into a historic area through the introduction of various functions that are open and accessible to the public. At the heart of the intervention is the new Archival and Cultural Hub, featuring consultation rooms, a research center, and the regeneration of the existing industrial structures, which will house a University Hub complete with residences, student services, and advanced education classrooms.
“Offering, in addition to the urban system, a second, immediate, and nearby frontage that connects with natural resources is the main goal of the project: a new identity-driven, cohesive, and recognizable landscape in which activities can be experienced in nature according to an innovative model,” says Antonio Stignani of Paisà Landscape.
The project aims to create a landscape connection between the urban system and the surrounding natural areas, such as the Po River, parks, and nearby nature reserves. This linkage revitalizes the urban context, creating a connected and resilient hub tailored to everyone. The reconnection between the city and the park is achieved by enhancing elements of historical memory and introducing a new network of paths immersed in the greenery of the widespread park.
The main path along the river opens into an amphitheater on the water, integrated into the natural morphology—a true open-air square on the Po and an oasis stretching from the Parco della Confluenza to Parco Pietro Colletta. Linear canals branch out within the area, flanked by paths that start in the urban zone and end with scenic terraces overlooking the river.
Water management is a central element for the site’s sustainability, particularly in rediscovering the riverine landscape. The use of sustainable urban drainage systems—such as tree pits, water plazas, permeable green surfaces, vegetated channels, and bioretention areas—integrates green and blue infrastructure with the built environment. This enhances biodiversity and ecological resilience, improving environmental quality.
